Hot Tub Electrical Requirements
: It's important that you contact a licensed electrician or contractor when planning for your hot tub electrical hook up. You should consult the owner's manual for your specific model and provide the information to your electrician. Proper planning will ensure a safe hot tub installation that meets local code and is free of financial surprises. - If your hot tub runs on 240 volts, it must be permanently connected (hard wired) to the power supply.
- If your hot tub runs on 120 volts, it may use a G.F.C.I. cord, plugged in to a dedicated grounded outlet.
- The power supplied must be a dedicated circuit with no other appliances or lights sharing the power.
- Wire size must be appropriate per NEC and/or local codes. It is determined by length of the run from the breaker box to the hot tub and the maximum current draw.
- Copper wire with THHN insulation is recommended. Do not use aluminum wire.
- The electrical supply for the hot tub must include a suitably rated switch or circuit breaker with a disconnection readily accessible to the hot tub's occupant, but installed at least five feet from the water. Check with local municipalities for additional code requirements.
- The electrical circuit must include a suitable ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) as required by NEC.
When installed in the United States, the hot tub electrical requirements must meet the requirements of the National Electric Code (NEC) and any applicable state or local codes. The electrical circuit should be installed by a licensed contractor and approved by a local building/electrical inspector.
